General causes for dialysis patients as well as general population

For people even without kidney problem, they may also occasionally experience stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms can be due to eating too much food, taking in cold foods, consuming too much fat, gastrointestinal tract disorder, etc. All of these conditions can occur easily in any person. If dialysis patients’ stomach cramping just happens one time, they can manage it with diet plan and lifestyle effectively.

However, some underlying causes of stomach cramping are related to kidney problem or dialysis treatment.

The first reason is that dialysis patients eat some foods within two hours before beginning dialysis. In this case, blood from patients’ muscles, legs and arms is easy to shift to their stomach, leading to cramping. Low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting are all signs of this problem.

The second one is eating foods high in fat. This kind of foods will stay in the stomach longer and are more likely to cause stomach problems.

The third one is electrolyte imbalance in the body. Even though dialysis can replace impaired kidneys to cleanse blood, it isn’t as effective as healthy kidneys. With dialysis treatment, electrolyte imbalance occurs commonly such as high potassium level, high phosphorus level and metabolic acidosis. This is just one trigger of stomach cramping as well as diarrhea and vomiting.
