When patients have to begin dialysis, it is more likely to indicate patients’ kidney failure has progressed into end stage. Although dialysis can help diseased kidneys to work, patients still need to follow a healthy-diet plan. Do you know what foods to avoid for dialysis patients? Try to find the answer here.
1. High-phosphorus foods
Many dialysis patients complain skin itching, muscle cramps and bone disease, all of which are caused by high phosphorus level. In this case, dialysis patients should control the intake of high-phosphorus foods such as dairy products, whole grain foods and seafoods.
2. Too salty foods
Salt is a main source of sodium. For patients on dialysis, extra sodium will cause or worsen water retention and raise blood pressure, so these patients should avoid too salty foods. Canned foods, fast foods, processed foods, bacon and salty drinks contain too much sodium, so patients had better stay away from these foods and drinks.
3. High-potassium foods
Potassium mainly exists in fruits and vegetables. It is reported that limiting these foods that have large amounts of potassium is important for dialysis patients. For example, banana, kiwi fruits, watermelon, white gourd, bitter gourd, and so on, have high levels of potassium. Therefore, if you are on dialysis, pay high attention to these foods.
4. Nuts and seeds
Dialysis patients are recommended not to eat extra nuts and seeds, because these foods contain rich both potassium and phosphorus. If you love these foods, you can consult the dietitian online to determine how many nuts and seeds you can add into your diet plan. Peanut butter, dried peas and beans are common nuts and seeds.
The above are some general dietary suggestions for dialysis patients. If you want to learn what foods to eat or not eat in detail, you can leave a message to kidneyservice@hotmail.com. We are glad to help.
