Will Diabetes Mellitus Develop Kidney Failure

Diabetes Mellitus(DM) is the leading cause of Chronic Renal Failure. It is reported that out of 100 patients, as many as 40 will the get kidney disease.

High blood sugar is the triggering factor of Kidney Disease in DM. The tiny blood vessels in kidneys are responsible for filtering blood and excreting metabolic wastes. High blood pressure can destroy the blood vessels over time, thus resulting in Chronic Renal Failure. If the patients have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, they are at higher risk of suffering from kidney damage. Then, how to find kidney damage early?

In the early stage, the kidney damage can be reversed completely. Therefore, the patients should have regular urine test to find kidney damage early. They are suggested to have microalbuminuria test once every half year and the test result can reflect the earliest kidney damage.

The patients with type 1 DM should have urine test every year after they have had the disease for 5 years. For the patients with type 2 Diabetes, they are suggested to start yearly testing at the time they are diagnosed with diabetes.

Symptoms of Kidney Damages in DM

Protein in urine, but it can not be detected by naked eyes. The patients can find it through a simple urine test.

As the kidney damage worsens, the patients will experience high blood pressure and high fat. Also, as the kidneys are not able to filter blood and extra fluid, swelling can be noticed, firstly in legs and feet. Later, high blood pressure and BUN will occur due to building up of metabolic wastes in body.

Kidney damages caused by diabetes can be reversed in the early stage, if you can receive proper treatment. Thereby, if you happen to be a person with diabetes, you are suggested to monitor your kidney function regularly and once kidney function declines, please take a medical therapy as soon as possible.
