Muscle Twitching in Dialysis

Some patients complain muscle twitching in dialysis. It may be caused by many factors related to the underlying kidney damage.

Muscle twitching and Dialysis

A muscle twitching is a prolonged involuntary muscle contraction that occurs in a muscle which voluntarily contracts when it is already in its most shortened position It is a common experience for many patients on dialysis. It is reported that about 30%~85% of dialysis patients has experienced muscle twitching.

There are many possible causes which are responsible for muscle twitching in dialysis.

Low Potassium Level

If low-sodium dialyzate is used, it will lower the levels of sodium rapidly. As a result, the blood vessels in muscle will contract and muscles can not get enough blood supply, thus leading to muscle twitching. Increasing the sodium concentration of the dialyzate can relieve twitching.

Diuretics Side Effects

For patients with dialysis, swelling is a common symptom. Diuretics are suggested to take, so as to alleviate this symptom. However, this medicine may cause the side effect of muscle twitching for they can interfere with the body’s mineral balance and contribute to cramping.

Electrolyte Disturbance

Kidneys work to remove the excessive waste products and fluids in the blood. Also, it can filter the excessive electrolytes and keep its balance in the body.

Once the kidneys are damaged, kidneys lose part of their functions. As a result, electrolyte disturbance occurs. What’s the relation between Electrolyte Disturbance and muscle twitching?

Muscle tissue relies, in part, on a range of minerals, electrolytes and other chemicals in order to contract and relax. As a result, the failed kidneys may cause muscle cramps.

Dialysis Side Effect

Dialysis may also cause various side effects and muscle twitching is one of them. Once you feel any discomforts, you are suggested to talk with your doctor or nurse.
