Safe pain medicines for kidney disease patients

Aspirin

Most of kidney disease patients take this medicine. Moderate amounts(75~300mg per day) have no harm on kidney function. Large dose of aspirin(>4g/d) will damage kidney function. However, that bad condition is reversible when patients stop taking aspirin. It has been proved that aspirin is obviously good for CKD patients with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. For renal transplant patients, aspirin can protect the kidneys through inhibiting the formation of thrombus.

However, the side effects should not be ignored. Patients should be careful about potential stomach bleeding or ulcers. More over, if their lives are compromised, even aspirin could be off the table as a painkiller.

Acetaminophen

It may be the only relatively safe painkiller if the patient can’t tolerate aspirin. Its metabolism happens in live, which will do little harm on the kidneys. Drinking alcohol while taking this drug is forbidden. Meanwhile, kidney patients should take it under a pharmacist’s direction.

Chinese medicine

Both aspirin and acetaminophen are chemical drugs. Besides them, Chinese medicine is a better choice for its natural ingredients. In addition, Chinese therapies, such as massage and acupuncture, are also helpful.
