CKD Stage 3, Fatigue and Muscle Cramps

Actually, for most cases, patients often find no big differences to live with Chronic Kidney Disease. However, as the kidney damage develops, some mild symptoms may appear gradually, such as fatigue, muscle cramps, Proteinuria etc.

CKD Stage 3

Stage 3 CKD means the person has a moderate decrease in kidney damage. This limits some of the filtering ability of the kidneys, but doesn't necessitate dialysis. And the GFR in such a stage ranges from 30 to 59ml/min.

Kidneys are important organs to regulate the internal system, and their function decline may affect each organ or tissues of the whole body. One of its ability is to remove the waste product and excessive fluids from the blood. When CKD stage 3 develops, the toxins will build up in the body, causing various symptoms, which affect patients’ normal life.

Kidneys are not only to remove the toxins in the blood, but also to release some substances, such as Erythropoietin to regulate the internal environment. Erythropoietin is a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red cells whenever their number is reduced.

When your are in CKD stage 3, the production of erythropoietin may not happen or may not happen in enough amounts to stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red cells and the result is anemia. This explains why people with kidney failure can be very tired.

Muscle Cramps

Muscle cramps is another symptom that may appear in patients with CKD. In most cases, patients may fell the cramps around the back of your leg or underneath your knee.

In patients with CKD, we find that their muscle cramps is related to the deficiency in potassium. When there is a severe deficiency of potassium, kidney function decreases. As the kidneys also regulate the levels of potassium, thereby, a kidney function decline may cause low potassium level.

And people who need to take potassium supplements often notice that when they stop taking the supplements, muscle cramps usually happens.

Some medical drugs, Diet management, as well as Exercise help alleviate the symptoms of fatigue and muscle cramps. However, the root cause is the kidney damage. Thereby, the treatment that helps improve kidney function is the basic way to reverse all the symptoms. To make a reverse, the Treatments, such as Micro-Chinese Medicine, Immunotherapy and Steroid Therapy etc may be utilized together.
