Alport syndrome is a genetic kidney disease. People who live with this disease, are more likely to have a low hemoglobin level. Low hemoglobin is usually an indication of anemia. If you happen to be a person with both alport syndrome and low hemoglobin, you may develop a condition called renal anemia.

What is the normal range of hemoglobin?

Ranges for healthy individuals can vary by age and gender, for an adult male the range is 14-18 gm/dL, an adult woman 12-16 gm/dL.

What does low hemoglobin mean?

Hemoglobin (Hgb) is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the cells of the body. A person with chronic kidney disease who has a low Hgb, most likely has anemia caused by decreased EPO production.

Can alport syndrome cause low hemoglobin?

Yes. Kidneys are not only important organ to remove waste products in the body, but also to excrete or secrete substances to keep the internal environment balanced. It works to produce erythropoietin (EPO) which stimulates the formation of red blood cells. And they are basically sacs of hemoglobin that carry oxygen around. In patients with alport syndrome, kidney damages cause the decrease EPO production. As a result, hemoblobin decreases also.

How to deal with low hemoglobin in patients with alport syndrome?

ESAs (erythropoiesis stimulating agents) is a common treatment for Kidney Disease patients with low hemoglobin level. ESAs are usually injected under the skin or given intravenously during hemodialysis.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is another alternative options for it helps repair the damaged kidney tissues and offer the chance for kidney to work well and release more hemoglobin naturally.
