Kidney Infection Symptoms and Test in Women

Kidney infection is very common, especially in young women. If treated early and adequately, kidney infection usually leads to a better outcome. Knowing the symptoms of kidney infection in women helps realizing the disease timely.

Kidney infections can affect each part of the urinary tract system, including kidneys, bladder, urethra and ureters. Infections occurring in different part will be named as different types. For example, when a kidney becomes infected, the condition usually is called as pyelonephritis. And the inflammation on urinary tract is known as urinary tract infection.

Women are more common to develop kidney infections than men. Bacteria may travel from the rectum or the vagina towards the urethra to gain entry into the urinary system. Skin may also transform the bacteria into urinary system. As the urethra in female is shorter, so they are at higher risk to develop kidney infection.

Kidney infection in women

- generalized malaise

- fever or chill

- nausea and vomiting

- Pelvic test. It is used to check the pelvic infection.

- Urine Test. This is the necessary test to diagnose kidney infection. A urine sample without evidence of urine infection makes kidney infection unlikely and another diagnosis may be considered.

- Image Test. CT scan or MRI help screen the abdomen and pelvis.
