Causes Of Ankles Swelling With Kidney Disease

Causes Of Ankles Swelling With Kidney DiseaseA common symptom in patients with kidney disease is edema, and patients often find they have swelling in their ankles at the beginning. While patients need to have a better understanding about this aspect, which is helpful for them to cope with their condition.

Why kidney disease patients have swelling in their ankles?

Edema in patients with kidney disease is mainly caused by hypoproteinemia and the retention of sodium and water.

For patients whose edema is caused by hypoproteinemia, the loss of protein from their blood will cause its osmotic pressure to decline, which will cause the fluid to flow into tissue space, so patients will have edema. And in this condition, because protein can bind fluid, so the removed water will accumulate in the lower part of our body due to gravity, so patients will often have swelling in their ankles.

While for patients whose edema is caused by the retention of sodium and water, because they may have normal protein level in their blood, and that can bind water in the blood, so the excess fluid will flow into eyelids where the skin is very thin.

So for patients who have selling in their ankles, it means patients may have large protein loss.

What can patients do to relieve their condition?

For patients with hypoproteinemia, they should increase their protein intake in their diet to supply the lost protein, while for patients with severe condition, they may need to inject protein directly. But the amount that they should take in should be calculated accurately. While the hypoproteinemia is mainly caused by the large loss of protein, which is caused by the damage in patients’ kidney structure. So to improve this condition, patients should repair their damaged kidney function.

On the other hand, patients should also restrict their salt and water intake, which is helpful in controlling this symptom, or at least preventing its aggravation.
