Itching Associated With Kidney Disease

Itching Associated With Kidney DiseasePatients with kidney disease may have many symptoms, among which itching is very common. Itching can influence patients’ life quality greatly, which may cause patients to have problem in falling asleep. Thereby, it is necessary for kidney disease patients to have a better understanding about this aspect.

Causes of itching

A major reason of itching in patients with kidney disease is the accumulation of nitrogen metabolites, and that can cause the sebaceous gland and sweat gland’s atrophy, which can cause patients’ skin dry, so patients may feel itching.

The itching in patients with kidney disease may also be caused by the hyperfunctioning of parathyroid gland. Patients with kidney disease often have hyperphosphatemia, which will lead to the decrease of calcium level, and that can promote the parathormone’s excretion. The increase of parathormone will lead to calcium’s accumulation in skin, and it can also cause the mastocytes to excrete histamin, and these can cause patients to have itching.

Patients with kidney disease may need to take many medicines, or touch the machine in their dialysis, especially for patients in the end stage of their disease. While these may stimulate the mastocytes in patients’ spleen, marrow or skin to excrete histamin, and high level of histamin in blood can cause patients to have itching.

Beside, for patients in the end stage of renal disease, they may also have nerve problem, and that may also cause patients to have itching.

How to treat this symptom?

In fact, the root of this symptom is patients’ kidney damage, so to improve this symptom thoroughly, the radical method is to improve their kidney function. Besides, patients should also deal with this complication according to their own condition.

For patients whose itching is caused by the accumulation of nitrogen metabolites, they should remove these metabolites, and dialysis can achieve this goal.

If patients’ itching is caused by the mineral disorder, patients should restrict their phosphorus intake, and supply the intake of vitamin D, which can promote our body’s absorption to calcium. Besides, if necessary, patients can choose to cut the parathormone glands off.

For patients whose itching is caused by the excretion of histamin, taking the medicines which can fight against histamin can relieve this symptom.

While to patients whose itching is caused by nervous lesion, the treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion may be useful.

In addition, patients can also relieve their symptom by smearing cooling oil or applying frozen towels on their skin.
