Stage 4 CKD: Is Vitamin D Helpful for Me

Stage 4 CKD: Is Vitamin D Helpful for MeChronic Kidney Disease is classified into 5 stages. In Stage 4 CKD, kidney function reduced severely with 15-30% left. Is it helpful to take vitamin D with this disease? Actually, patients should never take it without consulting their kidney doctor first.

Vitamin D

This vitamin is a kind of hormone that increases the circulation of calcium and phosphorus, minerals essential for healthy bones. On one hand, it assists the body in absorbing these two minerals from the foods. On the other hands, it encourages the bones to release stored deposits of calcium and phosphorus into the bloodstream. And, eventually, it will tell the kidneys not to excrete these minerals into urine.

Stage 4 CKD

Healthy kidneys produce calcitriol, also called active vitamin D. When kidneys are seriously impaired in Stage 4 Kidney Disease, they can no longer activate vitamin D. As a result, calcium levels drop and phosphorus levels increase, both of which are not good for the body. Excessive phosphorus may circulate in the blood and it begins to form calcium phosphate with the calcium. The calcium phosphate crystals develop on soft tissue, making the bones consider that there is no calcium in the blood. As a result, the bones will release all the stored calcium and continue doing this until it is all gone. The bones will become weak, soft and bendable.

If Stage 4 CKD patients experience a subsequent vitamin D deficiency, this supplement can be given to ensure normal metabolism. Talk to your nephrologist to see if it is proper for you or what is the best amount that you should take. Or, you can email us at or leave a message in the below for more professional advice.
