Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Is Fish Oil Good to Take

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Is Fish Oil Good to TakeChronic Kidney Disease (CKD) can be a long and depressing haul. One question often asked by kidney patients is whether fish oil is ok to take. Read on to find the answer.

The research has shown that fish oil is helpful to retard the progression of IgA Nephropathy, a disease that can end in Kidney Failure. Many nephrologists also suggested that patients with other types of CKD take this supplement, as it has the benefits as below:

a. Decrease inflammation. Kidney patients or people on dialysis often experience problem of chronic inflammation. Fish oil has anti-inflammation properties because of its concentration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

b. Reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fish oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Both people with Diabetes or CKD are risk factors for CVD, so it is beneficial to take this supplement. The standard dosages have not been established. You can consult your doctor about this.

However, people with CKD should not take fish oil without consulting their nephrologists. Though it is generally harmless, it may interact with aspirin and other common over-the-counter drugs. In addition, it may inhibit the immune system, which may be an issue for people who are already taking immunosuppressive agents.

Therefore, people with CKD should always discuss taking any supplement or drug with their kidney doctor or chat with our doctor online. According to your specific condition, our experts can offer you more helpful advice.
