CKD: Does Normal Urine Output But Foamy Urine Requires a Specific Diet

Q: I am diagnosed with CKD last month. And my urine output is 2100ml every day and I have foamy urine now. Do i need care my diet strictly from now on?

A: It is good to hear that you have yellowish 2100ml urine everyday which means your kidneys are still in a early kidney damage stage.

For your proteinuria, because of the glomerular becomes necrosis and sclerosis due to CKD, thus resulting in increased glomerular permeability. As a result, the proteins in blood will leak into urine through glomeruli.

The main function of glomeruli is like a filter, the nutrition substances are abstracted from the blood, and the waste products are discharge into the initial urine. Most of the protein should be maintained in the human body, only a little protein should be discharged into urine. However, as your glomeruli get damaged, especially the bore diameters as they are bigger which lead to a lot of protein be leaked into the initial urine.

And there is not that much requirement for your Diet if your electrolytes are in normal range, but for now, you should care more about protein foods: high quality protein food is good for you. And you can find good choices, such as fish, chicken, milk, egg white, etc.

Limit plant protein as they are not easy to be absorbed, such as bean curd, soy-bean milk and soy products. And limit the salt intake: in order to protect the kidneys, reduce the work load, salt intake should be less than 7 grams every day. Forbidden of stimulating effect of food, such as mustard, onion, ginger, garlic, chili, (no smoking, no drinking alcohol drinks or coffee), tea also should be limited, but if you would like to drink tea, please avoid strong tea, and green tea is the best choice.
