Renal Acidosis: Test, Symptoms, Treatment

In patients with Renal Acidosis, the acid content of the blood being higher than normal and that of the urine lower than normal. Read on and find the test, symptoms and treatment of renal acidosis.

To diagnose RTA, doctors check the acid-base balance in blood and urine samples. If the blood is more acidic than it should be and the urine less acidic than it should be, RTA may be the reason, but additional information is needed to rule out other causes.

If RTA is the reason, additional information about the sodium, potassium, and chloride levels in the urine and the potassium level in the blood will help identify which type of RTA a person has. In all cases, the first goal of therapy is to neutralize acid in the blood, but different treatments may be needed to address the different underlying causes of acidosis.

- Urinalysis may show increased levels of calcium and potassium

- Urine pH, usually greater than 5.3 in patients with this condition

- Kidney stones

- Increased breathing rate

- Confusion or decreased alertness

- Muscle weakness

- Bone pain

- Decreased urine output

- Pain in the back, flank, or abdomen

-Impaired growth

- Increased heart rate or irregular heartbeat

Treatment for renal acidosis should involve both balance the acid-base level and electrolyte levels. In addition, the root cause that leads to renal acidosis should be identified and corrected.

Vitamin D and calcium supplements are usually not given because there may be calcium deposits in the kidneys, even after bicarbonate therapy.

With treatment, the people with isolated (primary) Renal Acidosis should continue to have good kidney function and be healthy, except for the urinary concentrating defect, on a lifelong basis. Thereby, if you happen to be a person with Renal Acidosis, you are suggested to take treatment as soon as possible.
