Horseshoe Kidney: Symptoms, Complication, Test, Treatment

Horseshoe kidney,symptoms,treatmentHorseshoe kidney is a condition in which two developed kidneys are connected to each other at the lower part and grow together. It seems that horseshoe kidney does not affect the kidney function superficially. However, the patients are more common than the normal ones to develop some diseases.

Symptoms

If your child happen to be a person with horseshoe kidney, he or she may experience one or more of the following symptoms.

- chills or fever

- dark urine, pink urine, Blood in Urine

- flank pain, Back Pain, side pain

- vomiting and nausea

- frequent urination, especially at night

- restlessness

- repeated urinary tract infection

- poor weight gain

- abdominal mass

In addition, about 1/3 of children may not show any of symptoms of horseshoe kidney.

Complication

The children who have horseshoe kidney ar more common to develop at least one complication as follows:

- various cardiovascular, gastrointestinal conditions or skeletal problems

- kidney stones, crystals and proteins that form stones in the kidney that may lead to a urinary tract obstruction

- Polycystic Kidney Disease or Kidney Cancer

- hydronephrosis - enlargement of the kidneys that is usually the result of a urinary tract obstruction

- hydrocephaly and/or spina bifida

Test

To avoid the symptoms and complications of horseshoe kidney, the early diagnosis is important. To diagnose this disease, your child may be required to do the following tests:

- blood and urine Tests: this helps your doctor to know how well the kidneys are functioning.

- Ultrasound: Physicians are able to view internal organs as they function, and assess blood flow through various vessels by this test.

- intravenous pyelogram (IVP) - This is an imaging technique that uses an x-ray to see the structures of the urinary tract.

- voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) - This is a specific x-ray that examines the your child's urinary tract. The images show if there is any reverse flow of urine into the ureters and kidneys.

Treatment

No cure exists for horseshoe kidney. Treatment for horseshoe kidneys aims at dealing with the symptoms, complications and improve kidney functions.

- antibiotics are usually used to deal with the repeated infections.

- Steroids Therapy is applied to alleviate the symptoms, such as Hematuria, back pain etc.

- Surgery may be used to remove the kidney stones.

- Herbs.
