Why CKD Symptoms Appear Later

Why CKD Symptoms Appear LaterAs we know, CKD can damage our health severely, while it is not easy to be found, because CKD patients may not have any symptom in its early stage. This is funny, but it is true. So many people may have this question: why CKD symptoms appear later?

CKD is divided into five stages according to patients’ GFR level, which is a reflection of kidney function.

The GFR of patients in stage 1 CKD is ≥90ml/min. Patients in stage 1 CKD have normal GFR level, but they have kidney lesion at the same time.

The GFR of patients in stage 2 is 60~89ml/min. To patients in stage 2, they have kidney lesion and their GFR level has slight decrease.

The GFR of patients in stage 3 is 30~59ml/min, and stge 3 is divided into stage A and stage B. Patients in stage 3 have moderate decrease in their GFR level, and their kidney lesion is relatively severe. Besides, patients in this stage may have some symptoms.

The GFR of stage 4 is 15~29ml/min. Patients in stage 4 CKD have severe decrease in their GFR, and they will have more obvious symptoms.

The GFR of patients in stage 5 CKD is <15ml/min. Except for the severe symptoms, patients in this stage may need dialysis or kidney transplant to sustain life.

From this list we can see that patients would not have any symptom until they are in stage 3 CKD, and not all patients in stage 3 CKD will have symptom. So why does the condition exist?

In fact, kidney has strong compensation. The kidney damage can not affect our body’s metabolism until more than half of our kidney function has been damaged. If there is any damage in kidney, other parts of our kidneys can also complete their work well. While CKD is a progressive disease, and if patients’ disease is not controlled in the early stage, patients will have more and more severe condition.

When patients’ disease has progressed into stage 3, the damage kidney function may be more than half in this time. Thereby, patients’ kidneys can not do their work well, and the metabolic wastes and toxic substances will accumulate in their blood. Then some symptoms will appear, and patients will have more obvious and severe symptoms as their kidney damage progresses. Thereby, CKD patients will always find their symptoms when they are already in the later stage.
