Topics: Ketosteril

Details: Hello Dr, I have high creatinine levels, and i'm using Ketosteril to lower creatinine levels, will Ketosteril cause some side effects?

Expert Answer

Ketosteril is usually used with a low-protein diet to help lower creatinine levels, especially when the GFR level declines to less than 25ml/min. Toxicologic study shows that ketosteril has very low toxicity and it has no feta toxicity.

While helping lowering high creatinine levels, ketosteril is likely to cause some side effects, such as high blood calcium and metabolic disorder of amino acids. High blood calcium can increase the risk for cardiac arrhythmia. While we can say the most severe side effects of ketosteril is the decreased kidney function. Ketosteril can just restrain the production of creatinine as well as urea, as to the kidney damage, ketosteril is unable to deal with. With the loss of kidney function, when the condition develops ESRD, this kind of drug fails to work.

The best way to lower high creatinine levels is to recover kidney function gradually.
