Details: I have Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease. Creatinine level is 2.4. I also have hypertension, diabetes and urinary tract infections. Why do I have UTI?

Expert Answer

Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease means kidneys are damaged moderately. Urinary tract infection is one common symptom of kidney disease. The reasons include the following aspects.

- Buildup of waste products and toxins: Although kidneys are great excretory organ, they may fail to work normally when more than 50% of kidney function is lost. At stage 3, kidneys are more likely to lose their ability to filter blood perfectly. As more and more waste products and toxins accumulate in the blood, the internal environment will be disturbed. Infections especially urinary tract infection is triggered easily.

- Low immune ability: With the decline of kidney function, patients’ immune ability decreases gradually. Besides, the application of steroids and immunosuppressants can also worsen this condition. Low immune ability makes patients susceptible to bacterial or virus infections.

- Loss of protein: When kidney filtration membrane is damaged, a lot of protein will leak into the urine. Accordingly, a number of immunoglobin also leaks into the urine. This also weakens the body’s ability to fight against infections.

The above are the causes of urinary tract infection for patients with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease. Different causes need different treatments. To learn the detailed treatment for managing this problem, you should tell us more about your medical condition online.
