Can Atrophic Kidney Affect The Other Kidney

Posted: by Venu-Marker Time: 2013-02-27 17:10

Topics: Kidney Shrinkage

Details: My father is 65 years old. He had a big stone in right ureter operated for extraction 15 years ago around 6 cm *5 cm and he did IVU at that time. But it shows that the right kidney do not work now. By USS it looks small and atrophic. Is it can effect the other kidney?

Expert Answer

Based on our conversation online, your father conducted surgery 15 years ago to get out the stone. The damage in his atrophic kidney was caused by obstruction which makes blood circulation difficulty. It is not inflammation damage like IgA Nephropathy or nephritis, and generally speaking non-inflammation damage won't affect the other kidney.

Now, the question is that his right kidney has no function. The left kidney need to take the burden of two. My concern is that long term compensatory work will make the left kidney occur damage and function decline.

My suggestion is that the right kidney should be treated to reverse certain function and the left kidney should be protected timely before any problem occurs. For similar case, we generally adopt systematic traditional herbal osmotherapy to promote and protect overall renal function. If convenient, how about replying me back with more details on your father's recent blood test and urine test reports? You can send email to
