Can Dialysis Patients Eat Pecan Nuts

Posted: by Dr.Zhao Time: 2015-02-24 09:31

Topics: Dialysis Dialysis Diet

Details: My father has been on dialysis for two years. Can we give him pecan nuts?

Expert Answer

Patients are usually recommended to begin dialysis when their creatinine level is lower than 15%. Seriously damaged kidneys are unable to eliminate extra phosphorus and potassium from the body effectively. Then, patients with end stage kidney disease are more likely to be tested out with high phosphorus level or high potassium level.

Dialysis is one treatment option that can help cleanse the blood for kidney failure patients, but dialysis especially hemodialysis is unable to eliminate potassium and phosphorus as effectively as healthy kidneys. Then, patients on dialysis still need to control their phosphorus and potassium intake.

Nuts are one great source of the above two minerals especially phosphorus. Although pecan nuts are less in phosphorus than other nuts, dialysis patients still need to control their pecan nuts intake tightly.

The intake amount should depend on patients' illness condition. To determine how much your father can take, you are suggested to tell us his phosphorus and potassium levels in the blood. Then, doctors here will give you the answer in detail.
