Can Dialysis Cause Diabetes

Posted: by Dr.Zhao Time: 2015-02-17 03:38

Topics: Dialysis Dialysis Side Effects

Details: I have been on dialysis for two years. Now, I am tested out with diabetes. Is it associated to dialysis?

Expert Answer

Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are two common types of dialysis treatment. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease especially in end stage, so quite a part of dialysis patients also have diabetes.

If patients' kidney disease is due to other problems, they may also be diagnosed with diabetes during kidney dialysis. This usually occurs on patients with peritoneal dialysis, because peritoneal dialysis uses glucose-based dialyzate. If patients can't control the concentration of dialyzate correctly or too much glucose builds up in the blood, patients will be at a risk of type 2 diabetes.

In addition to dialyzate, unhealthy diet plan or obesity may also be the causes of diabetes for dialysis patients. No matter which is the direct cause of diabetes for dialysis patients, this disease will worsen their health condition easily. Therefore, patients on dialysis especially peritoneal dialysis should pay attention to the dialyzate and follow a healthy diet plan with doctor's guidance.

Since you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you should take diabetes medications and modify their diet plan timely. Otherwise, you may have further kidney damage and some other complications easily.
