Prognosis of FSGS in 20 Year Old Man with Gross Proteinuria

Topics: FSGS Protein in Urine FSGS Basics FSGS Prognosis

Details: I am a 20-year-old man with FSGS for one year. Now, I also have gross proteinuria. What is my prognosis?

Expert Answer

Proteinuria is one typical symptom of FSGS kidney disease. In some cases, patients may also have high blood pressure, swelling or hematuria. Because of these complications, kidney function level, lifestyle, and some other conditions, FSGS patients' prognosis changes from person to person.

There is no doubt that proteinuria is one dangerous risk for bad FSGS prognosis. If uncontrolled effectively, protein leakage will induce further kidney damage and accelerate the progression of FSGS. From this point, FSGS patients should take prompt treatments to manage their proteinuria.

ACEI and ARBs can help expand blood vessels all over the body including kidneys, while kidney filters consist of tiny blood vessels. As the pressure against vascular walls declines, protein leakage is alleviated. Steroids and immunosuppressants are used to inhibit the inflammatory reactions and activity of immune complexes in the kidneys, so as to prevent protein from leaking out. All of these drugs can help treat protein in urine.

Well management of proteinuria can help improve patients' prognosis to some extent. However, if patients want to reverse their kidney damage and treat their FSGS from the root, they should take some systemic therapies. Consult the doctor online to determine which therapy is best for you.
