Details: My has high creatinine level 6.1, no swelling and no high blood pressure. Does drinking more water reduce high creatinine level?

Expert Answer

There are many reasons that can induce high creatinine level from dehydration to kidney problem. Since your serum creatinine level is 6.1 mg/dl, it is quite higher than the normal.

If your high creatinine level is caused by dehydration, drinking more water can help stimulate the kidneys to produce more urine, taking away more creatinine and some other waste products. However, if your high creatinine level is due to kidney problem, drinking more water won't help to reduce the decline of high creatinine level. This is because kidneys are unable to eliminate extra fluid from the body. In this case, drinking more water will cause extra fluid to retain in the body, worsening swelling and high blood pressure.

From the above analysis, we can know the underlying cause of high creatinine level determines the result. If your high creatinine 6.1 mg/dl is caused by kidney problem, you should take some medications or therapies to increase your urine output and improve your kidney function timely.
