Details: My son is age 11, and he is suffering from Nephrotic Syndrome. Can you treat it without steroid? If possible, please reply.

Expert Answer

Nephrotic Syndrome is characterized by swelling and proteinuria. In order to alleviate these symptoms and control Nephrotic Syndrome, steroid is often used. However, because this medication works through inhibiting the immune system, it may cause a series of problems including cold, infection, fever, weight gain, moon face, slow growth, and so on. Besides, quite a number of patients with this disease don’t respond to steroid, so they are eager to find some alternative therapies.

In the past, there is no other effective therapies to treat Nephrotic Syndrome. With the development of medicine technology, kidney experts work together and create some effective therapies. One of these therapies is called Immunotherapy which focuses on removing pathogenic factors especially immune complexes from the body, normalizing the immune system, and prompting the recovery of impaired kidney cells. Without pathogenic factors, the relapse rate of NS can also be reduced a lot.

During the whole treatment, some auxiliary methods are also needed such as Medicated Bath, Acupuncture, Cycle Therapy, Foot Bath, etc. Thereby, you can consult the doctor online to seek the most suitable treatment plan.
