Is Creatinine 1.9 Alarming for Diabetics

Topics: High Creatinine Level High Creatinine Level Treatment

Details: My mother is 58 years old, and she has had diabetes for 8 years. Last month, her blood test shows her creatinine level is 1.9. Is it alarming?

Expert Answer

Serum creatinine level is one indicator for kidney function. Normally, healthy kidneys can eliminate waste products including creatinine from the body thoroughly, so serum creatinine level ranges from 0.5 to 1.1mg/dl for female and 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dl for male.

Creatinine 1.9 is just higher than the normal value, so it must reveal some underlying disorders. The most common cause is kidney damage. Additionally, overwork, dehydration, strenuous exercise, eating too much meat, and so on, can also cause creatinine level to increase to some extent. However, high creatinine level due to the later causes can come down spontaneously, if patients modify their diet plan and have healthy lifestyle.

If the later causes are ruled out, patients should pay highly attention to creatinine 1.9. This is because it is more likely to indicate more than 50% of kidney function has been lost. We call this condition Diabetic Nephropathy or diabetic kidney disease. If uncontrolled effectively, diabetic nephropathy will progress into kidney failure easily.

If you haven’t got the cause of your mother’s high creatinine level or want to find effective treatment to lower high creatinine 1.9, you just need to email to kidneyservice@hotmail.com or kidneyservice@hotmail.com.
