Details: I have PKD and my kidneys have been aching and hurting regularly. I was diagnosed with this disease in 2004, and my mother also has it. Why do my kidneys hurt?

Expert Answer

Firstly, we should know Polycystic Kidney Disease is one inherited kidney disorder which may affect several members in one family. From your description, we can know your kidney disease is inherited from your mother.

You were diagnosed with PKD in 2004, and until now, it has passed 10 years. During this period of time, your PKD kidney cysts must have grown a lot. Enlarged kidney cysts can oppress their surrounding kidney tissues and replace these tissues easily. This is one reason that causes your kidneys to hurt regularly.

As kidney cysts grow, kidney stones may form. When kidney stones move through or block the urinary tract, back pain or kidney pain occurs easily.

Additionally, kidney cyst rupture is another reason that can cause this symptom, because it can induce urinary tract infections or kidney infections.

Now, we have know the causes of kidney pain for PKD patients. The next step should be to deal with these underlying causes to ease patients’ kidney pain effectively. However, the treatment should depend on patients’ illness condition, so you should consult the doctor online about your treatment plan.
