Details: I was just diagnosed FSGS. And I am interested to know "is FSGS fatal"?

Expert Answer

Focal segmental glomerulonephritis refers to some sections of glomeruli are scarred. Glomeruli, like a “renal filter” to process the blood throughout your body. If they are damaged to scarred, the protein may begin leak into the urine, instead of staying in the blood. And it will cause series of symptoms, such as Proteinuria, Edema, high blood pressure, frequent urination at night etc.

If FSGS cannot treated timely, the scarred tissues will become dead and affect the healthy tissues to lose kidney function gradually. Each year, many cases of FSGS step into Kidney Failure Stage. According to a research made in the year of 2000, there are currently 19,306 people living with ESRD due to FSGS. Approximately 1,000 FSGS patients a year receive kidney transplants7 however, within hours to weeks after a kidney transplant, FSGS returns in approximately 30-40% of patients.
