IgA Nephropathy: Can I Use a High Protein Diet to Lose Weight

IgA Nephropathy: Can I Use a High Protein Diet to Lose WeightPeople with IgA Nephropathy are suggested to follow a proper diet to ensure better treatment effects and slow down the progression of the disease. Then, can they follow a high protein diet to lose weight?

IgA Nephropathy, or Berger's disease, is caused by inflammation of the kidneys' filtering units-glomeruli. Blood and protein get leaked into urine due to waste filtration not function adequately. As a result, the kidneys fail to function correctly to discharge waste products. These substances may build up in the body and causing poisoning.

If patients eat a high protein diet, when the body digest it, more waste product called urea is produced. Since the kidneys are not working well, urea will accumulate in the bloodstream and may lead to loss of appetite and fatigue. So, a low-protein diet is suggested for people with IgA Nephropathy in order to reduce the workload on the kidneys.

So, how much protein do you need?

For IgA Nephropathy patients with mild to moderate CKD (stage 1, 2, and 3), a daily protein intake of 0.75 grams per kilogram of body weight is suggested. While, in more sever kidney disease (stage 4 and 5), considering 0.6 grams of protein per kilogram each day. The intake requires close monitoring.

The best choice of high quality proteins include leaner cuts of meat, fish and eggs. As there are so many types, some found in unlikely sources, it is important to follow the guidelines of a dietitian who can tailor an appropriate menu based on your particular protein needs.
