What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate.

The term “vitamin D” refers to several different forms of this vitamin. Two forms are important in humans: vitamin D2, which is made by plants, and vitamin D3, which is made by human skin when exposed to sunlight.

Vitamin D is found in many foods, including fish, eggs, fortified milk, and cod liver oil.

How does vitamin D influence IgA nephropathy?

Vitamin D influences IgA nephropathy by 2 mechanisms: The first is suppression of the renin-angiotensin-system so as to control high blood pressure, which is responsible for excessive leakage of protein in urine. The other effect is through inhibition of the inflammatory and fibrosis. IgA nephropathy may be the most common type of glomerulonephritis. The damage of glomeruli decrease GFR (glomerular filtration rate), leading to large amounts of protein to be discharged by kidneys. Vitamin D are anti-inflammatory so that it is beneficial for reducing proteinuria.
