Top Ten Facts on IgA Nephropathy

IgA Nephropathy refers to a immune-related inflammation on kidneys. Here are the top 10 facts on IgA Nephropathy for your reference.

- IgA Nephropathy is a chronic kidney disease which may progress over a period of 10 to 20 years. If this disorder leads to end-stage renal disease, the patient must go on dialysis or receive a Kidney Transplant.

- If too much protein leaks into the urine, the hands and feet can swell. After 10 to 20 years with IgA nephropathy, the kidneys may show signs of damage.

- IgA Nephropathy slows down the kidney in its ability to filter the food intake from the waste, as well as the electrolytes from the body and excess water. Eventually, this disease will cause the person to urinate with protein and blood, have swelling hands and feet, high blood pressure or worst, kidney failure.

- About 25 percent of adults with IgA nephropathy develop total kidney failure. Only 5 to 10 percent of children develop total kidney failure.

- Among patients who develop overt proteinuria and/or an elevated serum creatinine concentration, progression to end-stage renal disease is approximately 15 to 25 percent at 10 years and 20 to 30 percent at 20 years.

- The rate of progression is typically slow with the GFR often falling by as little as 1 to 3 mL/min per year, a change not associated with an elevation in the serum creatinine concentration in the short term.

- The cumulative incidence of Dialysis or death was much higher in IgA Nephropathy patients with hypertension (defined as >140/90 mmHg) at disease discovery compared with those without hypertension.

- IgA nephropathy can occur at any age, even in childhood. More men are affected than women. Although found all over the world, IgA nephropathy is more common among Caucasians and Asians. It is one of the most common diseases of the kidney, other than those caused by diabetes or high blood pressure.
